What is the best business to start to build financial independence, create meaningful work and have more free time?

If you’ve found yourself on this page because you want to end your financial dependence on an employer and work for yourself instead, doing meaningful work you love and having more time to actually live and enjoy your life, then this could be exactly what you’re looking for.

More people than ever are looking for a realistic way to escape the rat race without quitting their jobs first and putting all they have into a business that might fail. Some love the idea of a side hustle, but for those that really want to work for themselves (forever!) and want to generate a significant income, the number one thing they want to know before starting anything is if it will be worth their time and effort?

Of course you want to know before you invest your already limited free time into any business idea if you can count on it to grow, fully replace your income and allow you to finally sack your boss. Frustratingly, it can feel like the more you want it to work out, the harder it can be to find the “perfect” business idea.

So let me put your mind at ease and tell you it is absolutely a realistic approach to start a business alongside your day job and grow it into a thriving business that replaces your income before you even hand in your notice, especially in today’s digital world.

Nothing is ever certain in business, but there are ways to reduce your risk of failure and build your confidence as an entrepreneur. Although I wholeheartedly wanted to quit my job when I first started my business, I chose to stay until I knew I was ready to never need a job again!

It was really important to me to not just be able to make money with my business, but to do work that was meaningful and fulfilling and to feel proud to tell people what my business stood for and two of my favourite motivational speakers inspired me to find the courage and grit to build something I absolutely love!

What kind of businesses create financial security?

Robert Kiyosaki (author of bestselling book ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad') teaches the importance of building assets that don’t require your time on an ongoing basis, so any successful venture can be easily scaled up without you ever running out of time. A great way to do this, without hiring a team of people, is to start an online business and use technology instead of people - perfect for introverts!

Technology nowadays is very user-friendly and it’s a cheap way to introduce automation so your business works for you 24/7 on autopilot. This enables you to make more money from your business by just pressing a few buttons and/or you can build multiple income streams as you explore new business ideas in the future while also protecting yourself financially by not having “all of your eggs in one basket”.

So what online business models can be automated, work well around your job in the beginning and free up your time in the long run?

Get started with Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a great business model to start as a total beginner, but it’s so versatile that many established entrepreneurs also use it to offer services or products not within their own range. As an affiliate, you sell other businesses products and get a commission - without having to develop the business, hold stock yourself or fulfill any of the orders.

You can partner with as many businesses and sell as many different products as you like (multiple income streams), and you can sell the same products over and over, so your earning potential is uncapped. This business model can be highly automated, so you can literally make money while you sleep or while you’re working your day job, until eventually your monthly affiliate income replaces your salary.

Sell with E-commerce

Another great option for beginners is to sell physical products with an e-commerce business. You don’t need to come up with something that’s never been done before to succeed with a physical product. You can order existing products in bulk at a fraction of the cost and set up an automated selling system.

Services like Amazon FBA will do the heavy lifting for you. They’ll process payments from customers and deal with storage, packaging, distribution and customer service, so all you have to do is set up your selling system and marketing campaigns and ensure the sales come in.

Something to consider before you start a business

No matter what you’re selling, your first 10 sales will be the hardest to make, but once you reach that milestone, you’ll have learned so much and gained so much confidence that you’ll be able to rinse and repeat your process to make the next 10 / 100 / 100,000 (it’s unlimited after all).

So how long will it take to get your business off the ground? This is an impossible question to answer and it really varies a lot, person to person. It depends on the business model and products you choose, your commitment to learning the digital skills you’ll need to succeed online and very importantly, your commitment to your dream of becoming an entrepreneur.
